Many states have increased educational opportunities for their Guardsmen. For instance, the state of Alaska provides 100% tuition assistance for their Guardsmen who enlist for a 6 year period. In addition to the state funding, Guardsmen can use their Montgomery GI BIll proceeds for shelter, food, and books. When a college or university is mandated to provide 100% free tuition (such as a volley ball scholarship) it only represents revenue "not gained". The reality is, precious state revenue need not be allocated. It is merely an an "earned chair in the classroom".
Oregon's Guardsman tuition assistance program is one of the stingiest in the nation. Thousands of Oregon Guardsmen have served in Iraq. They took the heat off the active force. It is much more challenging to maintain the Guardsman lifestyle than active duty. Guardsman have families, civilian jobs, and the Guardsman commitment. They are not "paid to shave", and represent the highest order of patriotism. Our young men and women in the Oregon Guard are our next generation of leaders.
Oregon needs to reevaluate their current Guardsman tuition assistance program and then bring it in line with many of our more generous states. We want to attract and retain the Oregon patriot Guardsman. In order to do this Oregon will have to better their Guardsman tuition program. Please see new GI Bill page also.
